OUR STORY

Restaurateurs, Tony and Ann Chemmanoor, set their roots in Mount Vernon over thirty five years ago. Bombay Grill, the original, was a trendsetter among Indian restaurants in Baltimore. After opening several successors all over Maryland, the couple returned to the Charles Street corner to open Saffron. It was later renamed Indigma to reflect its new direction. However, it was short lived after a devastating five-alarm fire took down the building that housed the restaurant. Tony and Ann made the decision to move across the street to a temporary location, which serendipitously landed them a space just above their very first restaurant, Bombay Grill. Unfortunately, in the spring of 2017, an electrical fire in the basement of the historic building forced Indigma to close once again.

In December 2018, Indigma made its return as the redefined, redesigned Indigma Modern Indian Bistro in what used to be Tavern on the Hill. The husband and wife team revived the old space–breathing new life into it by creating a trendy bistro with flair. The couple stayed true to the previous design paying homage to the late Ted Pearson, award-winning interior designer of Rita St. Clair Associates, by painting the walls with Pearson’s bold saffron and vibrant purple–hues that made for a stunning setting in the modern dining room.

Although it took over a year and a half to rebuild, Indigma’s loyal followers were there every step of the way. Indigma’s back, and we’ve missed you as much as you’ve missed us. Like a phoenix, Indigma rose from the ashes to begin again in Mount Vernon. This will likely be our last homecoming, as Indigma Modern Indian Bistro is the crowning glory of our dynasty of restaurants.

Thank you for welcoming us home to Mount Vernon for our final encore.
